For four weeks in 2010, South Africa will be the center of the world as it hosts the FiFA World Cup Soccer tournament. Beginning on June 1st at the Kings Park stadium in Durban and culminating on June 29th, the world will be watching nail biting soccer matches played in a country with a fabled past and a strong passion for the game.

Soccer is already the most widely played sport in South Africa and in 2010, the people of the southern tip of Africa will welcome over 3 million visitors into their backyard. Work has already begun on the major upgrade of Soccer City, the home of South African football and the venue of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final.

The Soccer City stadium near Soweto in Johannesburg is to undergo a major upgrade for the 2010 tournament, with a new design inspired by traditional African pottery and a revamped capacity for 104 000 football fans. On Friday 7 July, 2006, the Tempodrom in Berlin witnessed a welcoming to South Africa, and in turn South Africa welcomed the world. The emblem depicts the energy and vigour of the African continent. The inspiration for the footballing figure over the shape of Africa is drawn from Khoi-San rock paintings, and is also representative of its deep and long history.    more...


World Cup 2010 will be hosted at 10 exceptional venues located in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Rustenburg, Bloemfontein, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Durban and Cape Town.

New stadiums will be built at Mbombela in Mpumalanga and in the Nelson Mandela Metro in the Eastern Cape while five existing stadiums will undergo major renovations.    more...

 

 





Host nation of 2010 FIFA World Cup - South Africa
